Summer 1996 saw the opening of a new vantage building on the rock of the Sphinx. The vantage hall with its terrace is situated 117 metres above the Jungfraujoch–Top of Europe and offers incredible views of the imposing mountain world with the Aletsch Glacier, but also an unrestricted view as far as Italy, Germany and France. The building is made accessible by a spacious double lift with a capacity of up to 1,200 persons per hour.
The Jungfraujoch is not only an attractive viewpoint, but also an ideal location for a variety of research projects. Clean air and the ideal railway access are a prerequisite for a variety of scientific studies. Astronomers, geologists, physicists, meteorologists and hydrologists make valuable contributions regarding topics of environmental research.
