Severe weather: BOB Zweilütschinen-Grindelwald railway line interrupted until Friday

The railway line of the Bernese Oberland Railway (BOB) between Zweilütschinen and Grindelwald is expected to remain closed until Friday, 16 August 2024, following the severe weather on Monday evening. The track and overhead line were damaged by the large amount of water and fallen trees. A rail replacement bus service will be operated from this evening (13 August 2024) onwards.

Both the railway line and the main road between Zweilütschinen and Grindelwald were affected by the severe weather on Monday evening, 12 August 2024. The main road can be reopened from 7.30 pm on today, Tuesday, with traffic being routed alternately.

The extent of the damage to the railway line was assessed on site on Tuesday. This revealed that the Bernese Oberland Railway (BOB) line between Zweilütschinen and Grindelwald is expected to be interrupted up to and including Friday, 16 August 2024. The costs for the restoration work cannot yet be quantified.

Rail replacement buses in operation from Tuesday evening

On Tuesday evening from 7:17 pm and until further notice, replacement railway buses will run on the main road between Zweilütschinen and Grindelwald. One route will run directly to and from Grindelwald, the other route will run to and from Grindelwald Terminal.

Diversions today, Tuesday

Since Tuesday morning, travellers to and from Grindelwald have been travelling via Wengen/Männlichen, thanks to the support of the Grindelwald-Männlichen gondola (GGM) and the Wengen-Männlichen aerial cableway (LWM). The last ascents from Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald Terminal will take place this evening at 6:30 pm, the last descents from Männlichen at around 7:00 pm.

Travellers to the Jungfraujoch from Interlaken Ost/Zweilütschinen are currently travelling via Lauterbrunnen/Wengen with a change at Kleine Scheidegg. The connection will be reinforced with supplement trains until further notice.

Travellers to the Jungfraujoch from Grindelwald currently travel on the Wengernalp Railway (every hour) via Kleine Scheidegg or on the Eiger Express from Grindelwald Terminal via Eigergletscher station.
